The DataBase Group (www.dbgroup.unimo.it) is the research database group at the Department of Computer Engineering of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia; it is led by Professor Sonia Bergamaschi and is composed of about 10 researchers. Its research activities focuses on Intelligent Database Systems and Intelligent Information Integration. Since 1985 the group was very active in the area of coupling artificial intelligence (Description Logics) and database techniques to develop Intelligent Database Systems. On this topic very relevant theoretical results have been obtained and a system (ODB-Tools) performing consistency check and semantic query optimization in Object Oriented Databases was developed.

More recently, research efforts have been devoted to the Intelligent Information Integration topic. An I3 system, called MOMIS, which provides an integrated access to structured and semistructured data sources and permits a user to pose a single query and receive a single unified answer has been proposed. Description Logics plus clustering techniques constitute the theoretical framework and are exploited for constructing a common ontology, i.e. an integrated view of the information in the separate sources, and for query processing and optimization.

The DataBase Group was member of AGENTLINK I, AGENTLINK II and is currently member of AGENTLINK III (European Network of Excellence for Agent-Based Computing) and Prof. Bergamaschi was co-chair of the Intelligent Information Agents group of interest of AGENTLINK II. The DataBase Group participated in several national/international research projects. More recently, the research group of Prof. Bergamaschi is involved in the following european projects:

WINK-Web-linked Integration of Network-based Knowledge (IST-2000-28221), which is an activity within the EUTIST-AMI cluster. The specific objective of the WINK project is to validate a combination of two promising software platforms which will perform automated, efficient data collection and project management in complex smart organizations, made up of physically and organizationally remote partners participating in large-scale projects.
SEWASIE - Semantic Webs and AgentS in Integrated Economies (IST-2001-34825), a 36 months research project, started in May 2002, that aims at implementing and advanced search engine, which will provide European SMEs with intelligent access to heterogeneous information on the Internet. The project aims at overrunning current information retrieving tools, that often are difficult to use and produce pages of links (mostly worthless) from a simple query. Prof. Bergamaschi is in charge of the scientific and administrative coordination of the project.

Il DataBase Group (www.dbgroup.unimo.it) e` il gruppo di ricerca sui database presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'informazione dell'Universita` di modena e reggio Emilia; e' coordinato dalla Professoressa Sonia Bergamaschi ed è composto da circa 10 ricercatori. L'attivita` di ricerca e` rivolta principalmente ai Sistemi Intelligenti di Basi di Dati e all' Integrazione Intelligente delle Informazioni. A partire dal 1985 il gruppo è stato attivo nell'area dell'accoppiamento tra tecniche di intelligenza artificiale (Description Logics) e database per lo sviluppo di Intelligent Database Systems. In quest'area sono stati ottenuti risultati di ricerca rilevanti e, sulla base di questi risultati teorici, è stato sviluppato il sistema ODB-Tools che compie il controllo di consistenza degli schemi e l'ottimizzazione semantica delle interrogazioni nelle basi di dati ad oggetti.

Di recente, gli sforzi della ricerca sono stati indirizzati verso l'area della Integrazione Intelligente delle Informazioni (I3). È stato proposto un sistema, chiamato MOMIS, che fornisce un accesso integrato a dati strutturati e semi-strutturati e che permette ad un utente di porre una query per ricevere una singola risposta unificata. La base teorica è fornita da tecniche di Logica Descrittiva e di clustering che sono utilizzate per costruire una Ontologia comune, i.e. una vista integrata delle informazioni residenti nelle singole sorgenti, e per compiere l'ottimizzazione delle interrogazioni. Il DataBase Group è stato membro di AGENTLINK I ed AGENTLINK II (European Network of Excellence for Agent-Based Computing), attualmente è membro di AGENTLINK III ed il Prof. Bergamaschi è stao co-responsabile del gruppo "Intelligent Information Agent" di AGENTLINK II. Il DataBase Group partecipa ed ha partecipato a molti progetti di ricerca nazionali/internazionali riguardanti gli argomenti descritti sopra. Recentemente il gruppo di ricerca è stato coinvolto nei seguenti progetti:

WINK-Web-linked Integration of Network-based Knowledge(IST-2000-28221), che è in un'attività del cluster EUTIST-AMI. L'obiettivo specifico del progetto WINK è di validare la combinazione di due promettenti piattaforme software che compiono la gestione dei progetti e la collezione dei dati in modo automatico ed efficiente all'interno di organizzazioni complesse e 'leggere', costituite da partner che partecipano a progetti di larga scala e che sono tra loro remoti sia fisicamente che a livello organizzativo.
SEWASIE - Semantic Webs and AgentS in Integrated Economies (IST-2001-34825), un progetto di ricerca della durata di 36 mesi, iniziato nel maggio 2002, che si pone l'obiettivo di realizzare un motore di ricerca avanzato che fornirà alle PMI europee un accesso intelligente alle informazioni eterogenee presenti in Internet. Il progetto mira a superare gli attuali motori di ricerca per il reperimento di informazione, che molto spesso sono difficili da usare e che a partire da una semplice interrogazione producono pagine di link (spesso inutili). La Professoressa Bergamaschi e` il coordinatore scientifico e amministrativo del progetto.
