.NET/Database Developer Position

The Heinz-Nixdorf-Chair for Distributed Information Systems at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena (Germany) invites applications for a .Net/Database developer position (for the purpose of one year parental leave replacement) in the data management project of the Biodiversity Exploratories (BE) Priority Program.

What this is about

The data management project provides the platform for data storage and information exchange for the projects of the DFG Priority Program “Biodiversity Exploratories“. Examples of the thematic focus of the projects include botany, forestry, soil, animal, fluxes, modeling, and remote sensing.

Under this project, we develop tools for upload, storage, documentation, discovery (search), retrieval, integration and analysis of dataset that is collected by several researchers in different parts of Germany. At the moment, we are also collaborating with several other projects in the development of an improved version of our data repository application (BEXIS2, http://bexis2.uni-jena.de/).

Job Description

-          Module development for BEXIS2, testing, bug-fixing and documentation

-          User requirements collection and analysis

-          Provision of user support services

Requirements

-          University degree in computer science, biodiversity informatics, bioinformatics or a related discipline

-          Experience with development of .NET web applications particularly using C#, MVC. Knowledge of ASP.NET, ORM is a plus

-          Experience in writing SQL, and working with databases in general

-          Familiarity with source code management systems is a plus

-          Highly motivated team player

-          Good knowledge of English

-          Authorization to work in Germany

This is a 50% or 100% position (depending on your preference) and it is paid according to up to EG-E 13 (TV-L) depending on your qualifications.  You will be working in an international and integrative environment. The Frankfurt Big Data Lab is announcing 

Data Challenges WS 2016

(Winter Semester 2016/2017)

Course Description: Students will take part to two Data Challenges. One offered by Deutsche Bahn AG and one offered by ING-DiBaBank.

Eligibility: Bachelor Students, Master Students, and PhD students across multiple disciplines are encouraged to attend the kickoff and to sign up for one Data Challenge.

Students in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, Information Systems, Business Computer Science, and others will form teams of 2 to explore the questions posed.  Team members are required to attend the kick-off lecture to sign-up for this project.

Course Registration:  You have to register for the Data Challenge WS 2016 in the form below. Registration is preferable in teams of 2 persons. Deadline for registration is Thursday, 20.10.2016.

From September 19th to September 22nd 2016, the DBgroup will hold a course on "Big Data Analytics" in collaboration with CINECA.

The instructors are:

The course tackles the fundamental technologies to handle, and to extract value from, the so-called Big Data: Apache Hadoop/Spark, basic MapReduce programs, SQL on Spark, Machine Learning on Spark, and R language on Spark.

The main language for the course is Python. Although, experience in Python programming is not required to successfully complete the course.

The paper "Blast: a Loosely schema-aware Meta-blocking Approach for Entity Resolution", by Giovanni Simonini, Sonia Bergamaschi and H.V. Jagadish, has been accepted at VLDB 2016.

Sonia Bergamaschi, Fabio Benedetti and Giovanni Simonini are going to present two works at SEDB 2016 - 24th Italian Symposium on Advanced Database Systems June 19-22, 2016 - Ugento, Lecce, Italy.

Sonia Bergamaschi will be member of the insight review panel of the SFI Research Centre: INSIGHT-Irelands Big Data and Analytics Centre in the National University of Ireland, Galway on 25-27 November 2015.
